PROGRAMME OFFICER: Advocate Ester Kibanga
The objective of this programme is to provide legal counseling to poor and marginalized people in the Kilimanjaro region and to promote mediation and reconciliation.
The counseling program is designed to use mediation to achieve reconciliation among parties. Open to all people, the counseling program is an opportunity for conflicting parties to voice their differences and work to a mutual agreement without taking the matter to court. Clients are able to come to KWIECO’s main office for legal counseling and KWIECO takes the legal counseling services to the community through Legal Aid Camps.
The counseling program works in liason with other organizations, for horizontal learning but also for referral purposes. Main issues received by counseling include marital conflicts, inheritance, property rights, child custody, maintenance, land disputes and gender based violence.
Currently at KWIECO, we have seven paralegal counselors at the main office and 150 at ward level in six Districts of Kilimanjaro Region.
Capacity building for paralegal counselors is done in order to enhance learning.
