Abortion Access Force (formerly Lady Parts Justice) was a left-of-center abortion advocacy organization. The group was previously a project of the Sixteen Thirty Fund, a 501(c)(4) funding and fiscal sponsorship organization managed by the Washington, D.C.-based consultancy Arabella Advisors; in 2016, it acquired nonprofit status. 1 2 Abortion Access Force was the 501(c)(4) lobbying arm of the 501(c)(3) affiliate Abortion Access Front, a project of NEO Philanthropy. 3 The group ceased operations in December 2021. 4

Background

Lady Parts Justice was founded in 2012. The group was initially incubated by Creative Majority, a group that claimed to be a 501(c)(4). But the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has no record of Creative Majority ever filing for tax-exempt status. Creative Majority was allegedly the nonprofit group affiliate of Creative Majority PAC, which was controlled by Revolution Messaging. 5 In January 2019, the Capital Research Center filed an IRS complaint against Creative Majority after it refused to provide documentation required to be made public under federal regulations for nonprofit organizations, including its application to the IRS for tax-exempt status. 6

Sometime before 2017, Lady Parts Justice transferred to the Arabella Advisors-managed Sixteen Thirty Fund. By 2017, the group had become an independent nonprofit. 5

In May 2019, it was announced that Lady Parts Justice would be renamed Abortion Access Force. 7 The group later claimed that the change was made to in order to make them mote “inclusive” toward transgender activists, even alleging that that its old name made it sound like “radical anti-trans, exclusionary creeps.” The group also wrote on its website: “Let’s be clear: not all ladies have uteruses,” the group wrote. “And not everyone with a uterus identifies as a woman. Full stop.” 8

Abortion Access Force was reportedly the brainchild of Lizz Winstead, co-creator and former head writer of “The Daily Show,” who wanted to create “a comedy war room” that produces content designed to “normalize abortion, celebrate those who provide it, and fight like hell to keep it accessible and legal. 9

The group did not have formal chapters but instead had loose groups of activists who hosted comedy and storytelling events in support of abortion. 10

According to Winstead’s LinkedIn profile, the group ceased operations in December 2021. 4

Activities

In September 2018, Abortion Access Force activists joined with Reproaction activists to protest Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) office in Manhattan demanding that he oppose the confirmation of then-Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court. 11

In June 2019, the Washington Free Beacon reported that Abortion Access Force posted content on social media in support of abortion and opposed efforts to ban third-trimester abortions. 8

Controversies

Abortion Access Force drew criticism for being a “dark money” front group through its relationships with the Sixteen Thirty Fund, which is known for creating “pop up” groups that do not have to disclose their donors and give the appearance of grassroots activism. 12

In June 2020, Abortion Access Force co-founder Lizz Winstead appeared on The Margaret Cho podcast and compared unborn babies to cancer. Winstead said, “When they’re like, ‘Life begins at conception, I’m like A. conception is not a medical term, it’s a term that comes from the Bible,” she said. “But B., like, I don’t subscribe to your premise on any level. And so, when you say, ‘What about, it’s a life with different DNA,’ and it’s like, ‘Cancer has different DNA.’” Winstead also argued that life depends on the mother’s feelings towards her pregnancy. “You get to decide the value of your own pregnancy,” she said. “If the pregnancy that you have is a pregnancy that is unintended and not a pregnancy that you intend on carrying, then there is no mother, there is no baby.” But “if you are pregnant and you’re excited and you want to have a kid, you can put all the value on that pregnancy you want for yourself.” Winstead went on to joke about her three abortions, calling them just a medical procedure she had and saying that she “[didn’t] save receipts” in response to a man asking her how many abortions she had. 13

Leadership

Lizz Winstead was the co-founder and president of the Abortion Access Force. She is a former co-creator and head writer for “The Daily Show” and a co-founder of the left-of-center Air America Radio. She previously hosted a show on Air America Radio, “Unfiltered,” with Chuck D and Rachel Maddow. Winstead is the founder and chief creative officer of Abortion Access Force’s sister group, Abortion Access Front. 4

Arun Chaudhury was the vice president of the Abortion Access Force. He was a partner at Revolution Messaging and previously worked in the Obama administration as the White House videographer. 14

Scott Goodstein was the group’s secretary. He was the former chief executive officer and partner at Revolution Messaging. He currently sits on the advisory board of Abortion Access Front. 15

Financials

Abortion Access Force filed its only publicly disclosed full tax return in 2018. According to the tax return, the group had $114,634 in revenue, $103,778 in expenses, and $31,749 in net assets. 16
