Career
During his time in Philadelphia, McKay began performing stand-up comedy at local open-mic events. He performed at ImprovOlympic, where he was a founding member of the comedy troupe Upright Citizens Brigade. 2 5
In 1995, he was hired as a writer for the long-running NBC sketch comedy series, “Saturday Night Live” (“SNL”). He was promoted to head writer the following year at the age of 28, a position he held for two seasons until 1999. He also directed short films for the show, including the original SNL Digital Shorts. After leaving “SNL” in 2001, McKay formed a creative partnership with actor Will Ferrell, co-writing and directing a string of films including Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004), Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006), and Step Brothers (2008). In 2006, the duo also founded the production company Gary Sanchez Productions. 6
A turning point in McKay’s career was his 2015 film, The Big Short, a film on the 2008 financial crisis. The film earned him an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. He continued this shift toward mixing satire with serious, non-fiction topics with Vice (2018), a biographical film about former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, and Don’t Look Up (2021), a climate change satire. 7 McKay is also an executive producer on the television series “Succession,” directed the pilot episode “Celebration,” and directed for the series “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty.” 8

McKay has described himself as a democratic socialist and supported the campaigns of U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT). 9 10 11 12
