ANSWER (also known as A.N.S.W.E.R., the ANSWER Coalition, and Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) is a radical-left anti-war group with alleged ties to the communist Workers World Party (WWP) and terrorist organizations like Hamas. ANSWER was founded after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 to protest against what would later become known as the War on Terror. Since its founding, ANSWER has protested the U.S. blockade of Cuba, called for the abolition of NATO, labeled the Israeli war against Hamas in Gaza a genocide, and hosted the foreign ministers of communist Venezuela and Cuba in the United States to promote a positive view of their respective countries. 2 19
In February 2022, ANSWER told its supporters to attend events demanding “Peace, Not War with China!” hosted by anti-war group Pivot to Peace. The event was held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the “Shanghai Communique,” a diplomatic document produced by the United States and the People’s Republic of China declaring a mutual agreement to recognize Taiwan as a part of China. 29
Shortly after on October 31th, 2024, both Rep. Westerman and Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee Chairman Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) sent a letter to ANSWER Coalition national director Brian Becker accusing the organization of being subject to foreign influence and having ties to terrorist organizations. The letter alleged:
“ANSWER and its partner organizations, including Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and AMP, have well-documented connections to Hamas and Iran. For example, SJP and AMP founder Hatem Bazian raised money for KindHearts, which was investigated and had its assets frozen due to coordination with Hamas and Hamas officials. Furthermore, the Biden-Harris White House acknowledges that Iran is involved in funding U.S.-based anti-Israel organizations and protests. These Iran and Hamas-backed organizations include CAIR and AMP, which partnered with ANSWER to protest on July 24, 2024.” 30
