Trial Lawyer Political Influence

Along with the Justice PACs, the right-leaning Alliance for Consumers identified two other organizations in its report that labeled groups as “shady trial lawyer” PACs. Its report identified the AAJ PAC, which is associated with the American Association for Justice (formerly the Association of Trial Lawyers of America). The AAJ PAC contributed 98 percent of its $21.5 million in contributions to Democratic candidates from 2017 through 2024. It also identified that the Truth and Justice Fund Company spent more than $3 million in swing state U.S. Senate candidates in North Carolina and Montana. 1

From 2017 through 2024, the Justice PACs, the AAJ PAC and the Truth and Justice Fund Company contributed about $29 million in total support for Democratic U.S. Senate candidates and allied committees, according to the Alliance for Consumers. Some of the recipients include left-leaning groups such as America Votes, American Bridge, the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, and Emily’s List. 1

The Alliance for Consumers reviewed eight major leading trial lawyer firms with close ties to state and local government litigation and found that of $15 million donated from 2017 to 2020 for federal elections, about 99 percent went to Democrats. Of that, $4 million went to Joe Biden and the Democratic National Committee. Another $6 million went to Super PACs and other Democratic-aligned groups. 6
