Abortion Access Now is a left-of-center advocacy group formed in 2024 by the National Women’s Law Center. The group works as a pro-abortion coalition of several legal and activist groups including Planned Parenthood, Emily’s List, and Indivisible. The group supports codifying a federal right to abortion following the U.S Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade in 2022. The group claims that “abortion access has been hindered by restrictive laws, social stigma, and disparities that significantly affect Black, Latinx, AANHPI, Indigenous communities, rural communities, immigrant communities, people with disabilities, young people, and people with low incomes.” 1 2 3
Background
The Abortion Access Now campaign was launched in 2024 to promote the codification of a federal right to abortion. The campaign was organized by the National Women’s Law Center, the American Civil Liberties Union, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and Planned Parenthood Action Fund while establishing a steering committee with 17 other organizations including the Service Employees International Union. 2
The campaign is a project of the National Women’s Law Center, which stated in its 2023-2024 tax filing that the Center “joined leading reproductive health, rights, and justice organizations to launch abortion access now, a campaign to educate and engage people around the need for a new federal right to abortion and abortion access.” 4
Activities
Abortion Access Now has promoted the creation of a federal right to abortion, opposing the U.S Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022 while further alleging “Roe was never enough…[f]or decades, abortion access has been hindered by restrictive laws, social stigma, and disparities that significantly affect Black, Latinx, AANHPI, Indigenous communities, rural communities, im/migrant communities, people with disabilities, young people, and people with low incomes.” 1
The campaign states that its goal is to “pass federal legislation that guarantees rights and access to abortion without political interference” as well as “[e]stablishing a pregnant person’s right to abortion services free from political interference at the federal and state level.” 1
The group also supports full coverage for abortion by Medicaid and private health insurance to “address and undo the harms of the Hyde Amendment and related abortion coverage restrictions, including for immigrants.” 1
The group also supports expanding Medicaid to cover green-card holders and creating a right to abortion access for those in federal prisons. 1
Affiliated Organizations
Abortion Access Now was formed in 2024 as a collaborative effort of nine national pro-abortion and left-of-center advocacy groups that had committed $100 million to fund the campaign. A press release announcing the group’s formation stated that “The funding will help build a long-term federal strategy to codify the right to abortion, including lobbying efforts, grassroots organizing, public education, and comprehensive communication strategies to mobilize support and enact change.” 5
Founding members of the campaign included the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the Center for Reproductive Rights (CRR), In Our Own Voice: National Black Women’s Reproductive Justice Agenda, National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice (Latina Institute), National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum (NAPAWF), National Women’s Law Center (NWLC), Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), Reproductive Freedom for All, and Unite for Reproductive & Gender Equity (URGE). 5
Listed members of the group’s steering committee include the Service Employees International Union, National Abortion Federation, MomsRising, MoveOn, EMILY’s List, and Indivisible. 2
